_______ and I strolled towards the roller rink, chatting easily about nothing in particular, just glad to be together. It was a beautiful spring day, a shame to unnessisarily waste in a short car ride where we couldn't even hold hands for fear I'd get distracted by her soft skin and crash right into a ditch.

As we walked my mind kept drifting back to Kankri. He was one of my best friends, but I knew he liked my girl. The way he had glared at me when I put my arm around ______ was by far enough evidence of that.
I would not loose ______. If that meant having to force Kankri away, so be it.

With that final thought in mind, I held the door to the rink open for my wonderful girlfriend. She stepped through, grabbing my hand as she did to pull me in. Laughing, I raced with her towards the desk where Meulin was running the shoes.

The cat-loving girl gave us a Cheshire grin from behind the counter.
-------
((AN: If you could make your nickname into a cat pun, that would be all the better~))

I greeted the new ship-- correction, couple-- with a wave, smiling misheviously when I saw Cronus's arm around   (Nickname)'s shoulder. "Poor _____! How did mew get stuck with this hound dog?" I cried.

Being one of (Nickname)'s closest friends as well as an avid 'shipper', I had known of ______'s love for the tall greaser before she did herself. And boy, did I like to tease about it~

Playing along, _____ sighed dramatically, hugging Cronus closer. "I know, it's horrible, but I might just have to try putting up with him the rest of my life."

Cronus's violet eyes widened a fraction. Even as a joke, that was a serious vow. He kissed _____ on forehead when she smirked up at him. "Is it so hard to beliewve that I'd actually find a girl who lowves me as much as I lowve her?"

I squealed at the cuteness of it all as _____ blushed under the sweet words of her boyfriend.

Remembering I had a job to do though, I handed them skates with a wink, still humming slightly from excitement. _____ thanked me and they headed off to change.

When they turned away, I quickly whipped out my phone, texting at an ungodly speed. ' (=^ # ^= ) Eeeeee! The ship has sailed! Cronus x _____ is now purrfuctly cannon~'

The reply came in a few moments. 'WhY dId i EvEr DoUbT yOu?'

'(=^3^= ) I don't know, but I won the bet!'

'MuSt I rEaLlY wEaR tHaT hOrRiD
tHiNg? : o('

'(=^. .^= )Yes~ mew aren't getting out of this.'

I giggled, sensing Kurloz give in.
'FiNe, BuT oNlY fOr tHe DaY.'

'(=^ ^= ) I love mew~'

'YoU tOo, KiTtY. : o)'

I put my phone away with a happy sigh, looking up just in time to see a flash of bright red attempt to sneak by.

'Not so fast, you little meddler!' my hand shot out and caught Kankri Vantas by the collar easily, jerking him back with a strangled cry.

He grumbled under his breath but allowed me to drag him into the back room without much struggle.

"Just what do mew think you're doing here?" I hissed. I was well aware of Kankri's crush on _____. It was my self-sworn duty to be aware of all romantic things going on, and Kankri wasn't that hard to read.

"What?" The ginger tried to appear indignant, but a guilty blush had lit up his ears. "Aren't I allowed to go roller skating?"

Gog, was he a bad liar. "Don't mew dare even try to fool me, Vantas." I jabbed a finger at him. "I know why you're really here and--"

"I'm here to skate." He interrupted. I hit him upside the head in annoyance, earning an "Ow!" from Kankri.

"I will not let mew mess this up. Interfuring on their date is not going to earn mew any points in _____'s Good Book, trust me. Now, turn around and get your scrawny little butt back home befurr I furrce mew out myself." It was a promise, not a threat.

"I am highly triggered right now. Not only have you denied me my rights to skate, but you have inflicted me physical harm, accused, and insulted me! It is not proper for such unladylike behavior as well as--"

I covered my ears and growled as the boy started to fade into another of his infamous rants. He was a friend, but sometimes I really wished I didn't have to hear him.

"SHUT UP!" Finally snapping, I used one hand to cover Kankri's mouth and the other to twist both his arms into a lock while twining his legs. Oh yeah, I was a triple black belt.

He attempted to thrash, but soon found that only threatened to dislocate his arms, and went limp, glaring at me dully with those weird red eyes of his. "Mew done?" I asked him calmly. He nodded and I let go to help him stand, dusting off his red sweater a bit. My olive eyes were like stone when I pushed my point, dropping my cat puns. "Now get out. It's clear _____ and Cronus like each other. Don't you dare mess this up just because you're jealous." My gaze softened as I saw that familiar defensiveness flare in him. "You'll get your chance eventually, Kan, just be patient."

-----
Within Kankri's bruised heart, unaware to him, a dark emotion flared. It was small-- still just an inkling of what would come.
The emotion hid itself deep within as quickly as it appeared.

It would wait.
It would grow.
It would have its prize.

-----
Muelin was right, ____ should make her own decision.  It was only rational--

•In the back of his mind, something shifted, so small as to not be noticed.•

But this was not a rational subject a little voice •his conscience, he assumed• protested. This was LOVE. What chance would he use if he never got the opportunity? No, he had to take it. Cronus didn't deserve _____! She belonged to him, and him only.

The idea was growing. I crossed my arms, clinching my fingers until they hurt to prevent myself lashing out at the girl standing in front of me. "That 'chance' you so widely suggested will never come if I don't take it, Muelin." I stepped forward menacingly, sudden unrational anger overriding my will. My hands fell to my sides, shoulders tense and fingers curled into claws. I snarled. "Don't you see it? It's so obvious. Cronus, that bastard, will never allowthat chance!" The anger dissaprated suddenly, leaving only sharp sadness. I stumbled back, voice lowered to a whisper, mumbling the last part to myself more than anything. Sinking slowly to the floor, I clutched my head. "He'll lock my sweet ______ away forever, and I'll never get to tell her how I feel."

Muelin backed off a step with a flash of fear  in her eyes. But that was quickly replaced by cautious concern. Sitting next to me-- close enough to be of some comfort, but far enough to be safe -- she waited.

-----
Wide eyes glanced at Kankri. Not fear for herself, but for how he was acting. He never lost his cool like this. The only sound was his tense, quite mutterings. The message had been sent. Meulin just hoped the receiver would get here quickly.

Her prayer was answered a minute later as the door to the storage room slammed open.
"What's going on?"
------

Meulin looked up with relief, but I was confused. •There was a blank spot in my mind. A gap in my memories.•

… Wait. What am I talking about?
What am I doing on the ground? My, this carpet needs to be vacuumed. . .

I looked up, about to inform Muelin of the lack of cleanliness, but paused when I saw someone else had joined us.
When had he arrived? Why were they looking at me like that? Did I say something triggering? •This little memory glitch was sure annoying.•

Ruphio's broad-shouldered shadow left the doorway as he move quickly towards Muelin. She had a worried glint in her eyes when she glanced at me, and a single tear fell from her lashes, though she did not seem to notice. I must have said something very harsh.

The Spanish boy leaned down to cusp her face gently and wipe away her tear. He said something I couldn't understand, and she replied in equally hushed tones. Nodding, Rupioh straightened and gave me his usual easy going smile. But there was something I just couldn't place hidden in his brown eyes.

"Hey buddy," He held out his hand, which I accepted. He pulled me up easily, but instead of letting me go as I expected, he jerked me closer, practically crushing my hand in the steel grip of his larger one. I finally identified the emotion in his eyes: threat. "How about we calm down, alright? I think you can make it out the door yourself without any problems, can't you?"

I must have said something extremely insulting for laid-back Rupioh to be this upset.

"Of course." I pulled my now bruised hand away and straightened up. "I'm sorry to have done something to have triggered you, whatever it was. I will be on my way now." I nodded curtly and spun on my heel, and strode purposefully towards the door. I stepped out, closing the door behind. But something going on in the rink stopped me dead in my tracks.
--------

In the back room, Rupioh and Meulin shared a look behind Kankri's retreating form. Did he honestly not remember?

When he was completely sure the ginger was out of earshot, Rupioh spoke. "What happened?"

Muelin wrung the hem of her shirt, a habit she did when nervous. "You know how Kankri likes _____, right?" When he nodded, she continued, "Well … Cronus got to purr first."

"No way! Cro's actually got himself a girl? You sure _____ didn't lose a bet?" Muelin gave the exited teen such a flat look that he became sheepish. "Right. Off topic. Sorry. . . Why did Kankri come here of all places?"

"Becalws this is where Cronus brought ______ fur their date." Meulin sighed.

"Oh. I came through the back and I guess I didn't see them."

Muelin nodded and continued, "Well, they had just got on the rink when Kankri attempted to sneak pawst me. I caught him, obviously, and dragged him back here. I told him to leave, and it looked like he would at purrst..."

"But Kan is jealous and flipped out?" He finished for her.

"Of course he's jealous! Mew know how  stubpurron Kankri is. He wouldn't just give up on her beclaws she's dating." She paused. "As for flipping out... I've nevpurr seen him like that. There was something that just wasn't right. It could be that his compurrtition is his best furrend, but it was like all reason left him for a moment. All I could see was anger... and purrssessivness. I think he's somehow convinced himself _____ belongs to him. He's nefurr struck me as that kind of guy. But the weirdest thing is.... Well, mew saw it. He doesn't honestly seem to remempurr anything once he has calmed down."

Two pairs of worried eyes, one chocolate brown, one olive green, glanced silently once more towards the door.
THE PLOT THICKENS!

By the way, I should probably give you the basic setting for this story:
This is obviously humanstuck, and all the alpha male trolls go to the same collage and share an apartment thingy. The reader shares a dorm with the female trolls, Meenah is here roommate, and can often act as a crazy big sister to her.

Relationships are:
Kurloz/Meulin
Mituna/Latula
And Meenah/Rupioh

Everyone knows everyone, and are all basically buddies. Only Latula still has a handicap (can't smell, and is also blind, so Mituna helps her around.)
